  1. 1649-1705. English conspirator. A priest, he
  2. entered the Jesuit colleges at Valladolid,
  3. Spain, and St Omer, France, as a spy in
  4. 1677-78, and on his return to England
  5. announced he had discovered a `Popish Plot'
  6. to murder Charles II and re-establish
  7. Catholicism. Although this story was almost
  8. entirely false, many innocent Roman Catholics
  9. were executed during 1678-80 on Oates's
  10. evidence. In 1685 he was flogged, pilloried,
  11. and imprisoned for perjury. He was pardoned
  12. and granted a pension after the revolution of
  13. 1688.
